About the Farmer

Coffee is central to Burundi’s economy and represents an important source of income in the family economy supporting education and access to cash to construct houses. Kiryama comes from the verb "Kuryama” which means "to sleep“ in Kirundi. Royal Princes used to sleep on this hill and they rested well before going about their usual activities in the region. They like this hill and influenced the Catholic missionaries to set up a parish where Italian priests lived for more than 20 years.

This coffee is produced in Muyinga province in northern Burundi, a beautiful hilly region with an average altitude of 1500 - 1700 m.a.s.l. About 2000 farmers with farms spread over 50 hectares are working together with the washing Station. Due to the small size and yield on the average coffee farm or plot, washing stations are the primary point of purchase in Burundi. The average farm size is practically minuscule, smaller than 1 hectare, and the farmers grow other sustenance crops such as bananas, beans, yams, and cassava plants. The sparkling acidity of Burundi and the incredible complexity and diversity that’s possible here, and the taste of the place is as beautiful and varied as the place itself.
