About the Farmer

This coffee is named after a history we are proud to be a part of; La Mochilita is Spanish for "small backpack", and the name was inspired by our green-bean buyer, Angel, who has explored this terroir several times, always with his small backpack handy. This high-altitude coffee, produced on the La Libertad terroir (Huehuetenango region), is a blend of two varieties of Arabica; Red Bourbon and Caturra, selectively harvested at their ripest state. For the sole purpose of coffee traceability, we are working towards La Mochilita being processed at a single mill to ensure a more consistent profile.

La Libertad is the largest municipality in the department of Peten, northern Guatemala. This landlocked area is located at an altitude of 200 masl in a valley surrounded by high mountains. Upon these mountains, at an altitude of more than 1,300 masl, that you will find the production areas of La Mochilita.
The specific nature of this microclimate and its limestone terroir is reflected in the coffee's notes of chocolate and spice. The La Libertad terroir has the highest altitude in the Huehuetenango appellation, creating a more complex cup than a "standard" SHB quality coffee, which must be produced at 1,200 meters or above.
