About the Farmer

In Ethiopia, 98% of the coffee, including our Sidamo, is grown by smallholder farmers who manage farms no larger than a hectare. This small scale allows them to give meticulous attention to their crops, resulting in higher-quality coffee. These farmers play a vital role in Ethiopia's coffee industry, with nearly half of the population involved in some form of coffee farming. Small farms, like those producing Sidamo, use traditional and careful practices that contribute to the distinctive aromas and flavors found in each cup.

The Sidamo coffee region, located in the southern part of Ethiopia under the Yirgacheffe region, is renowned for producing some of the finest Arabica coffee in the world. The region's coffee thrives at high altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters, benefiting from the cool, highland climate that enhances the coffee's unique characteristics.

In Ethiopia, coffee is deeply woven into the cultural and economic fabric of the country, with nearly half the population engaged in coffee farming. Sidamo, like much of Ethiopia's coffee, is predominantly grown on small family farms of less than a hectare, allowing farmers to offer personalized care to their plants. This close attention is reflected in the coffee's distinctive aroma and quality.

Sidamo coffee is washed using a traditional process, similar to that of the nearby Yirgacheffe region. This method, reserved for the finest coffees, imparts a clean, bright flavor profile that highlights the region's exceptional terroir. With nearly all of Ethiopia's coffee cultivated on small farms, Sidamo represents a vital part of the country's rich coffee heritage, contributing to Ethiopia’s status as the birthplace of Arabica coffee.
