About the Origin
Nestled in the lush hills of western Rwanda’s Nyamasheke district, Gatare sits at 2,050 meters above sea level and is part of a region that produces half of the country’s coffee. With sandy-clay volcanic soil, steady tropical rainfall, and a temperate climate, the conditions here are tailor-made for exceptional coffee. The Western Province is famed for its elegant, fruit-forward profiles with crisp citrus notes and a rounded complexity that puts Rwandan coffee on the global specialty map.
This washed Red Bourbon from Gatare is a shining example of Rwandan specialty coffee, scoring 85.5 points with a complex and vibrant profile. It opens with intriguing vegetal notes reminiscent of tomato, layered with warming spices and maple syrup sweetness. Hints of milk chocolate provide a comforting depth, balanced beautifully by a bright, juicy apricot acidity. Carefully handpicked and sun-dried over 21 days on African beds, this coffee is a celebration of craftsmanship and terroir.
Behind this lot is the vision of Uzziel Habimana and Laetitia Mukandahiro, co-founders of Ikawa House, a company devoted to uplifting small Rwandan producers. Since 2019, they’ve championed traceable, ethical sourcing and reinvest 20% of profits into farming communities. At the Gatare Washing Station, about 575 smallholders contribute cherry from roughly 400,000 coffee trees. Agronomic training and sustainable programs like seasonal pig distribution support both quality and livelihoods, making this coffee more than a drink—it’s a symbol of progress and care.
