About the Origin

Inácio Urban is part of a traditional coffee farming family behind Rio Brilhante, a 1,755-hectare estate in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Of this land, 840 hectares are dedicated to coffee and 566 hectares are preserved as natural forest, showing a balance between production and environmental stewardship. The farm employs 87 local workers and 199 temporary workers, making it an important contributor to the local economy. The region’s altitude of 1000–1150 m.a.s.l., volcanic soils, and mild temperatures (18–25 ºC) create excellent conditions for producing high-quality coffees.

The Arara variety is a natural cross between Obatã and Yellow Icatu, prized for its resilience to pests and its exceptional cup quality. Often called the “Brazilian Gesha,” Arara has scored 90+ points in competitions organized by the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association. At Rio Brilhante, cherries are hand-picked and carefully sorted, then fermented aerobically for 48 hours before being sun-dried for 15 days on concrete patios. This meticulous process highlights the variety’s complexity and clarity in the cup.
